{Guest Post} How To Know When Your Makeup Has Expired
We’ve all been there. We’ve spent a lot of money on makeup that we simply must have and end up not using it while it sits in the back of the makeup drawer. Then one day, after many months or even years have passed, we see it again and wonder ‘Should I use it?’ The answer is no. Just like food, makeup has an expiration date but the manufacturers are not required to print the expiration date on the packaging so most people don’t know when their makeup has gone bad. If you’re wondering why using expired makeup is bad for you and how you will know if your makeup has expired, you’ll be sure to find these tips helpful.
Why You Should Be Aware Of Expired Makeup
When makeup expires it turns into a breeding ground for bacteria so if it’s applied to the skin it can lead to a series of problems. Side effects may include:
- Pimples
- Rashes
- Dry skin
- Skin allergies
- Eye infections
How To Know That Your Makeup Has Expired
Your makeup will let you know when it has passed its expiration date. All you have to do is pay attention to the signs. A few signs that your makeup has expired are:
- It smells bad.
- The consistency has changed.
- There’s water floating on it.
- In the case of mascara, it has gone bad if it’s dried out.
What Is The Lifespan of Makeup?
- Mascara- 3 months
- Moisturizers- up to 1 year
- Foundation- up to 1 year
- Concealer- up to 1 year
- Lip Gloss or Lipstick- 1 year
- Nail Polish- 1 year (just because you shake it doesn’t mean it’s good!)
- Eye Shadow- up to 3 years
Tips On Caring For Your Makeup
Finally, here are some tips on how you can get the most out of your makeup.
- When you purchase new makeup, write the date on it so that you know when it’s expired.
- If you have an infection, don’t use makeup on that area.
- Use a disposable sponge or applicator to apply your makeup.
- Keep your makeup in a cool place and keep the lids shut tight.
- Clean your makeup brushes regularly so that if there is bacteria on it, it won’t spread.
You should be just as weary of using expired makeup as you are any other aspect of your health. Although people generally feel that they are not in danger of harm, it’s better to take the extra precautions and not have to deal with the rest.

{Paige and Jill: Beauty on a Budget} Multi-Purpose Products
Any fashionista on a budget will tell you: it’s hard sticking to a sensible budget with so many fantastic products out there. Which is why we thought, what better way to get more for less than investing in some high quality multi-purpose products? We received some expert advice from Jila, who works at Sephora in Keystone at the Crossing, on some of the best multi-use products you can buy.
BareMinerals Prime Time Eyelid Primer - $18
This incredible product serves as both a primer to keep your eye shadow from creasing during the day, and also serves as a great grab & go shadow for that natural, just-rolled-out-of-bed-looking-this-good look. It comes in a variety of colors, including natural shades of Gold and Pearl as well as an awesome dark shade of green to keep things interesting.
Laura Mercier Baked Eye Colour – Wet/Dry - $22
Instead of stocking up on shadows for daytime and nighttime use, all you need to do with this product is wet your brush and the eye color can take your look from pretty and subtle to glam and fabulous. What we love best about this shadow is that it can take on a totally different look when applied wet! Some of our fave colors: Black Karat and Ballet Pink.
Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Shadow Pencil - $20
This crease-proof, waterproof pencil is great for blending powder and cream finishes. Not only does this stick come in fantastic colors, but also it’s great to add a bold kick to your makeup routine.
There are SO many great products out there. If you’re not sure what to look for, we highly recommend checking out Sephora. They’ve got experienced stylists who are full of knowledge on the best products for your skin type, style, and budget.
Happy shopping!

Objects of Obsession: Tiffany’s Weekly Top 5
Here are the beauty goods I’m finding it hard to live without this week:
1. Josie Maran Bear Naked Wipes: I admit it. Sometimes I am too tired to actually wash my face at night and go through the whole song and dance. When I type that, it seems ridiculous but it’s true. Enter these facial wipes to save the day (and face)…not only do they smell completely amazing (some kind of refreshing citrus-y goodness), but they take everything off and leave my skin feeling super clean and soft. When I wake up, my skin is still soft and supple…not dried out. These would be great in a gym bag as well for a quick refresher before/after a workout! Oh, and a bonus? A portion of the sale goes to help our furry Polar Bear friends. Consider this purchase justified.
2. NARS Lipstick in Pago Pago: I am currently loving this new fall shade from NARS. It is described as a shimmering pink, but honestly I find it to lean more nude-ish. The shimmer is super subtle, and the color serves as a perfect compliment to a nice bronze smokey eye. The formula is nice and creamy and with vitamin E, it will not dry out your lips.
3. True Blue Spa Really Refreshing Face Scrub with Peppermint: I have completely fallen in love with this facial scrub. The peppermint scent is so invigorating and proves to be a great help in waking me up in the morning. The scrub itself contains micro-fine particles that are not harsh on the skin – I always add my scrub to my cleanser for further protection from potential irritation and find that this works beautifully. I’ve used it once daily (and I don’t use any chemical exfoliators) and have found my skin to be super soft and smooth. This will surely be my go-to in the upcoming cooler months!
4. Ambre Blends Solace Essence Oil: When it gets cooler, my scents get warmer. It’s just how it is. At this time of year, I always switch my Ambre Blend to Solace. The scent contains the original Ambre essence and combines it with “sensual vanilla blends.” Pretty sure they had me at sensual vanilla blends. I love to layer my Ambre by using the lotion (which will SURELY be in another week’s post – it is so, so hydrating) immediately after showering and then rubbing the oil on my pulse points. Pure magic to my senses.
5. Clinique Even Better Clinical Dark Spot Corrector: Unfortunately, my days in the sun are now catching up with me and are revealing themselves in fun spots on my face. Can I get some love for my 30′s? Sheesh! Anyway…after a few weeks of using this serum in conjunction with Even Better moisturizer, I am noticing some fading and definitely more even-ness in my skin tone. Will my lovely spots ever completely go away? Not sure. But I do like what I’m seeing and love that this version of dark spot corrector contains gentler ingredients than a lot of other stronger products. It makes my skin pretty soft too, and the moisturizer has some great SPF. Hey, it can’t hurt.
xo.

{Guest Post: Free People} Layering Tips for Fall
Fall is here, the weather is getting cooler, and it is finally time to mold your summer wardrobe into funky autumn gear. It might be easier then you thought, as the great thing about fall fashion is there is always a new way to apply what you already have in your wardrobe to create a bold new ensemble. It’s all about the layers. Adding some scarves, knit tights, or a big comfy cardigan will turn any summer look into a fall one. Here are some key pieces to add to your collection, and how to bring them together to create the perfect layered look for the new season.
A good start off piece is a soft textured maxi skirt . They are loose and flattering, giving a modest but sexy touch to any wardrobe. Pair your loose or bulky items with more form fitting ones, like bandeaus with a maxi skirt and a dainty lace sweater. The mixture of textures and weights of the clothing will balance everything out, creating a care-free but form flattering and pulled together look. A maxi dress can be perfect when the waist is cinched with a large, wide belt.
Off the shoulder tops are a great addition for your fall wardrobe. They come in a variety of styles and can be worn classically or with a little more pizazz. Wear a soft and lacey over the shoulder sweater with knit tights and a pair of Jeffrey Campbell boots to create a sweet but sassy mixture. A slouchy tee shirt with cut off shorts is the perfect day outfit. Layer it up with a pair of tights with a funky pair of booties, and remember that any look is completed with a fun scarf or even two if you dare.
The great item to own this season is a crochet dress . They are super versatile and can be layered under or over, while still feeling dainty and feminine. Their rough texture goes well with knits and a suede purse or belt, and they also come in a variety of different styles, so you can always find one to compliment your wardrobe. Wear a crochet maxi dress with ankle strap sandals, or pair it with platforms for a more edgy look.
With these items added to your arsenal you can stay warm (and cool) in the crisp fall weather. Mix the pieces with some summer items. Floral prints go great with earth tones. The key to layering is having fun with it! You can be daring and feel your way through an outfit. Mix and match and experiment, just don’t get lost in your layers, and always consider your body type while playing with different fabrics. With lots of warm tones and fun accessories to get excited about, you will breeze through the season with a new and fun outfit to wear every day.

{Guest Post: Leslie Bailey} Celebrate the First Days of Fall with Fashion (what else?!)
While the fashion world remains abuzz with Fashion Week showcasing spring 2012 (however exciting that may be), the rest of us here on planet earth are really just ready for fall.
So what does fall fashion have in store for us this year?
Here, I’ve outlined the strongest contenders by theme. There are also suggestions for how to wear each trend and mix it with another.
You may have some of these items tucked away in your closet, others you may need to make a shopping trip for, but all will have you looking on trend this season.
Faux Fur – Not only is it animal friendly, it’s friendlier for your wallet too. The hottest faux fur fashion to rock this fall is a vest but keep your eyes open for other interesting accessories, such as purses and hats too.
Snakeskin – Python print is everywhere right now, you’ll find it in variations from the classic neutral print to bright, bold prints. This Zara shopper is a sleek way to incorporate the trend without going overboard.
Animal Prints – Show off your wild side with leopard and cheetah, sure to be a hit from your lingerie drawer to the board room.
Menswear – Hopefully you still have that oversized blazer somewhere because menswear is not going anywhere. Think baggy pants, fedoras, and even varsity jackets. Yes, I’m serious. Should you decide to go the tuxedo route, consider a silk camisole underneath to maintain a little femininity.
Loafers – Whether you prefer a sky-high heel or a flat, you’ll see every variation of loafer’s this season, from tassels to ties and of course that special place for your spare change.
Slippers – Not your oversized Tweety Bird numbers, think sleek flats that you’d shuffle around your English countryside estate in while smoking a pipe. These BP flats from Nordstrom (appropriately dubbed ‘Mansion’ do the trick, incorporating the animal print trend. ($59.95)
Bold colors – The bolder, the brighter, the better. If you’re yearning for a more subtle look, take the jewel tone route. For those looking to really shine, blood orange is the way to go.
Polka Dots – Loud and clear or small and inspired, this is fall’s cheekiest trend. Show of your playful side in a dotted party dress or give a more subtle nod with spotted hosiery and scarves.
Black and White – You could do the opposite of bright and bold with the forever classic, forever minimalist black and white look. Consider taking note from Janelle Monáe (pictured) and combine this trend with the menswear theme.
60s Mod – Shift Dresses, color blocking and Mad Men inspired lines ensure that 60s mod stays for another season. Now if you could only decide if you want to be a Twiggy or a Betty Draper.
70s Separates – The 60s isn’t the only decade feeling the love this fall, 70s inspired looks were (literally) following closely behind. Think long skirts, wide legged jeans, ruffled collars and floppy wide brimmed hats.
Capes – Another favorite from last year is sticking around. If you didn’t jump on board the first time around, now’s your chance. It’s a quick way to look chic without any fuss – just throw it on and go.
Notable Mentions
Leather dresses and skirts, chokers, skinny corduroys, duster coats and cable knit sweaters.
Phew! That should be enough to get you going. So what are your favorite looks for fall and how do you plan to wear them? I look forward to reading your comments below.
Now if you’ll excuse me, all of this fall fashion talk has me ready to pick apples, drink a pumpkin spice latte, find some crunchy leaves to stomp through…and of course, shop.

Kimmie’s Pre-Weekend Pretty-Up: Sugar & Spice & Everything…Fall
Fall is my favorite season. Not just because of the crisp weather, the pretty changing leaves, or trips to the apple orchard (hello, cinnamon doughnuts and cider!). I love fall because it comes with so many yummy-smelling beauty products. We’re talking sugar, spices, apples and pumpkins. It might sound like Thanksgiving dessert, but this week I’m giving you the rundown on my fave fall-scented products.
Apples to Apples: Philosophy has this great habit of making combination products, and their fall line of products always delivers. The Caramel Apple Shampoo, Shower Gel & Bubble Bath smells, well, exactly like a caramel apple. The apple-y scent makes you feel like you’re standing in an orchard. Also from this collection is the Caramel Apple Lip Gloss. Gorgeous sheer red color, delicious flavor and perfect fall scent make this gloss my go-to for fall.
Sugar and Spice: We girls might not always be made from “everything nice,” but at least we can still smell like sugar and spice! My fave spiced product is Sara Happ Cinnamon Sugar Lip Scrub. It gently sloughs off dry skin and softens lips. The cinnamon also temporarily plumps your lips, giving you the perfectly polished pout.
Pumpkin Perfection: Fall wouldn’t be fall without trips to the pumpkin patch, so it’s no surprise that pumpkin-scented stuff reminds us of this season. For a totally smooth body, reach for Bath & Body Works Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin Creamy Body Scrub. The scent is quintessentially fall, and the naturally exfoliating scrubby-beads smooth out rough patches instantly. My perennial favorite pumpkin product is True Blue Spa Renewing Face Mask With Pumpkin. I buy a new batch of this stuff every few years, and it’s amazing. Smear some on your face, neck and shoulders – you literally will see a difference in one use.
Do you have a favorite way to get into a cozy fall mood? Share with us!
Cheers!

Kimmie’s Pre-Weekend Pretty-Up: Things I’m Loving for Fall
There are a lot of fall fashion trends I’m thinking I really can’t pull off (hello, maxi skirts and southwest prints on my 5’2” frame? I don’t think so). I’ll stick to my boyfriend blazers and flat suede boots for now, thanks. Luckily, there are several fall trends and tricks that I absolutely adore. Here are four of my fall faves, designed to keep your hair, nails and accessories on track, even if you won’t be rocking pony-hair pumps anytime soon.
Shine Sprays: Even though we’ll soon be stashing the beachy wave sprays for the season and revving up our flatirons, you don’t have to sacrifice the health of your hair. Unlike most products, shine sprays add a super-glossy finish without weighing down your style. My picks are Avon Mirror Shine Spray and Benniefactor B Excellent Shine Mist (available at select salons).
Ridiculous Glitter Polishes: Glitter nail polishes tend to conjure up memories of rifling through shelves of sparkle jewelry, scented erasers and furry picture frames at Limited Too, but these polishes are making a huge comeback – in a grown-up way. Gone are the days of glitter pinks and purples, replaced by glitter metallics in silver, gold, and copper. My new favorite glitter is OPI for Sephora’s Traffic Stopper Copper. It’s like jewelry for your nails…who can argue with that?!
Homemade Spa Day: We all love a little pampering as we prepare to stuff our piggies into fall’s prettiest boots, but nobody wants the spa price tag. In this barely-recovering economy, cheap is still chic! Take advantage. Grab some olive oil and brown sugar and give your feet a luxurious scrubbing. Finish off with some serious TLC in the form of Avon’s Foot Works Berry Mint 4-Piece Pedi Pampering Collection (a total steal at under 10 bucks!).
Mixing Metals: There are few things in the style world that bum me out more than not being able to wear my favorite watch, bracelet, etc. because the metal “doesn’t match” the rest of my outfit. This fall, the gospel according to style (ahem, Michael Kors) has decided it’s finally time to do some mixing. So grab your silver, gold, and rose gold jewelry and go to town! The only exception? Mix jewels or mix metals, but don’t mix different metals and jewels. Mixy-matchy overkill.

The Average Joe: Eau de Toilette
Up to this point, all my columns have focused on making your man more visually appealing. Now it’s time to focus on making him more aromatically appealing.
If you’ve heeded my advice, your man’s no longer shedding beardruff all over, wearing denim disasters like skinny jeans and jorts, hiding under unkempt eyebrows, missing out on the wonders of a scalp massage or handing over his arm and leg for spectacles. But let’s be honest. All your hard work can be quickly negated if he’s still walking around smelling like he’s been riding a horse—even if he was riding it backwards.
So where do you start? You can’t just start spraying him every day with just any old cologne, body spray, or toilet water. No, it has to work for his own style, interests and personality—and maybe his Ph balance as well.
Thankfully, MensHealth.com has a Fragrance Finder for such occasions. In just three easy steps, you’ll be able to find the perfect scent to splash on your man. I found that Coach for Men works for me because I’m “understated but inquisitive, traditional, and a road tripper.” But you probably knew that already.

{Guest Post from Snappening} Birthday Party Ideas You Haven’t Used
Who said kids get to have all the fun on their birthdays? NO ONE, that’s who! So, we at Snappening are here to tell you about a few birthday party ideas that you haven’t used. And whether it’s celebrated at an Indianapolis event venue or at your own humble abode, you can definitely pull it off. Here are a few ways to keep it classy, shake it up a bit or just go right for a raving good time.
Sunday Brunch: A Royal English Tea Party
As Coco Chanel once told us, “A woman should be two things: classy and fabulous.” That is exactly what this brunch idea prides itself on. And who doesn’t want to pretend they are the latest English princess, Kate Middleton, on their birthday? A royal English tea party is the perfect excuse to dress in your Sunday best with all your fabulous friends and enjoy some quality (and classy!) time together. Here are a few things to remember when planning this one:
- Tea. Obviously! To appeal to wide range of tastes make sure you have a variety to offer to your guests. Looking for a traditional black tea? Try Harvest Café’s English Breakfast tea. In the mood for a nice jasmine green tea blend? Try Hubbard and Cravens’ Jasmine Pearls.
- China. You finally have an excuse to put your fine china to use! If you don’t have any, head to your local thrift shop or Goodwill. You are bound to find some unique pieces. We are digging the eclectic look of mismatched teapots, sugar bowls, cups, saucers and small plates for dainty finger food. Keep it chic by selecting pieces that complement your selected color palette. The overall affect is quite lovely!
- Pastries. Be sure to set up a feast of bakery-fresh goods! Some of our favorite places to pick them up include Taste Café and Taylor’s Bakery. These will make it easy to have visually appealing presentation and an easily served meal for your guests.
- Linens and Fresh Cut Flowers. Lacey table cloths are a must for creating a ladylike atmosphere. Consider layering a lacey table cloth over a solid colored table cloth to give your room a pop of color. Place vases of fresh cut flowers around the room for the last touch. Consider using fragrant flowers like roses, peonies and lilies.
Ethnic Flair: Moroccan Themed Party
Talk about spicing things up! Nothing says Moroccan like bold, bright colors, grab a healthy amount of lightweight chiffon at the craft store and multiple colors and start draping. That’s the first step to this party theme that goes underused. Let’s talk details:
- Green Tea Martinis. Green tea is one of the Morocco’s most popular drinks, so we say put a spin on it to make it a super chic cocktail to get the guests in a celebratory mood. Just add ½ oz of grand marnier, 2 oz. of vodka and lemon, and 1 oz of chilled green tea in a martini shaker with ice. Garnish with lime and serve.
- Beautifully Diverse Food. The theme can represent a mélange of culture so the options are infinite. We suggest keeping it simple with ethnic party favorites like hummus (perhaps a fun new flavor), pita and veggies. To add a little meat, grill some chicken or lamb kebobs! Oh, and couscous. Lots of couscous.
- Just Dance. After a few green tea martinis, it’s time to dance. But, to stick with the theme, belly dance. Seriously! You’re never too old to bust a move.
Rave: Neon Meets Neutral
It’s a sophisticated way to have a “highlighter party” outside of college. No, we don’t suggest wearing white T’s and writing on each other with your favorite school supplies – however, the color idea is all the same. Pair neutrals (think tan, beige or gray) with neon accent pieces to create an inimitable contrast in the look of your event. Dim the lights, hang some neon paper lanterns and let your (sophisticated) rave begin.
- Neon Cocktails. What better way to support the neon theme than to have a cocktail that is just that. Mix citrus flavored vodka with Blue Curacao liqueur, lime juice and pineapple juice and garnish with some bright fruit!
- Get creative. This theme is all about being bright, so turn on the lightbulb in your brain and get creative. We’re thinking… twine. Wrap your cocktail glasses with it to bring in the neutral theme to the neon cocktail. Hang your décor with twine instead of streamers. Tie your silverware in bundles with it. And contrast with neon everything – plates, napkins, balloons… and maybe even glowsticks.
- Entertainment. This is a sophisticated rave, Snappeners. But a rave is not complete without techno and upbeat, fast-paced music. Use neon playing cards if you want to have some tournaments, or bust out an old-time fave, Twister.
Now’s the time to celebrate in style with one of these hidden gems. But if you just can’t imagine pulling a birthday party together on your own, there is always the option to bring in one of Indianapolis’s professional event planners! Celebrating your birthday party in Indianapolis never sounded so fun!
