Not Just Another Pretty Face: Jami Marsh

I’m a native Hoosier, lived in New York City for about 13 years and came back to IN four years ago. I’m married and have two rambunctious boys, Wyatt & Sullivan. I’ve spent my career working in the non-profit sector and now run a fabulous initiative called Lemonade Day Indianapolis….secret talents? Kimmie’s Pre-Weekend Pretty-Up: Khaki & Lemon

While I’m not sure I can get on board with this season’s flowing ballerina dresses and flowery tops, there is one trend that I really love: khaki and bright yellow.  This color combination is popping up (like daisies!) everywhere this spring, and this week I’m here to tell you how to pull it off in your everyday beauty routine.

The Reverse French Tip:

Sick of the basic pink-and-white French manicure?  I am!  That’s one of the many reasons I love the newest trend in nail polish: the reverse French manicure.  Choose a khaki-toned nail polish – I recommend OPI San Tan-Tonio from the new Texas Collection if you’re looking for a medium hue.  For something with a more nude finish, go for OPI for Sephora in Going Nude, Eh?.  Paint your nails and let dry.  Next, take a teensy brush – think pointy-tipped paintbrush – and paint a small half-moon of bright yellow polish at the bottom of each nail.  I recommend something with a non-glittery finish, like Avon Nailwear Pro in Sunshine.  To get a better idea of what the finished product will look like, check out this black-and-white version featured in Glamour.

Flower Hair Power:

For those of us who can’t pull off the flowery look in our clothes – I tend to feel like a giant doily – hair accessories are a great way to work with this neutral vs. bright springtime trend.  Work into your ponytail, clip to a headband, or attach to the end of an oh-so-popular side braid.  Check out these two adorable flower clips in khaki and bright yellow.

Eye-Popping Color:

I’m not telling you to start caking on the yellow eyeliner, but a little pop of color goes a long way when it comes to updating your everyday makeup.  If you start with a neutral eye look – think browns or light grays – it’s relatively easy to sneak in some color.  For brown eyes, smudge a little goldenrod yellow into your upper lash line, like MAKE UP FOR EVER Pure Pigments Eyeshadow.  For green or blue eyes, I suggest a greener-tinged color, like the shimmery greens in Kat Von D’s latest eye palette, Truth.  I recently bought this palette, and the colors are much prettier in person.  Pops of color will look better and better as you start catching some springtime sunshine!

The combination of brown and yellow may seem like a drag, but it’s uncomplicated to work with and so right now.  This weekend, get your khaki and lemon on!

J. Crew – - Always a good bet if you’re looking for those classic pieces, J. Crew offers 15% off your entire purchase (minus sale items) for college students and teachers.  All you have to do is show your student or employee ID.   If you are planning on making a major dent during your next visit to J. Crew we recommend opening a J. Crew card because the first time you open it you receive 20% off your entire purchase.  For every $500 you spend after that, you will receive a $25 rewards card.

Banana Republic – - Banana offers a variety of savings that are not publicized so listen up ladies!  If you are a member of AAA you can receive 10% off your final purchase by showing your AAA membership card (this goes for GAP and Old Navy too).  They offer a 10% military discount the first of every month, and a 10% discount for teachers with valid employee ID.  Now you won’t feel so bad about buying those new linen pants you’ve been eyeing in the window!

Retail Websites – - Even those of us who love our designer labels crave a deal every now and then.  Our solution? Discount websites such as Rue La La, Gilt Groupe, HauteLook and Ideeli.  These websites are member exclusive sites that offer discounts on every designer label imaginable.  To become a member, sign up and wait to be “invited” by the website.  Once you are invited you will receive daily emails highlighting sought after merchandise from designers such as Michael Kors, Kate Spade, and Citizens of Humanity.  The window for the sale is timed, though, as there is a limited quantity of merchandise available.  It’s all about timing, so be sure to scope out the sales before they go live so you can get your hands on what you want before they sell out!  The e-mails are usually sent out around noon each day.

The Average Joe: Skinny Jeans…Not so Phat

Bootcut. Straight. Relaxed. Loose. Slim. If your guy has plans to add to his denim collection anytime soon, make sure these are the words he goes by. Heck, Painter can even be added to the mix—if his profession demands it.

But please make sure his search for jeans never…ever…ever includes the word Skinny.

In some pockets of Indy (pun intended), I’ve been noticing a disturbing trend—ridiculously tight-fitting jeans on men. And I’m not talking slender-fit jeans on men with equally thin frames. I’m talking about guys with substantial proportions who, for some reason, are choosing to pour themselves into a pair of blue jeans—stretching the denim to its strength-test limits. It’s unsightly…and frankly it’s un-American!

So it’s your patriotic duty to make sure your man’s wearing a pair of proper-fitting dungarees, and here’s a quick way to find out. The next time he’s donning denim, slide a comb into his back pocket. If you find you’re unable to retrieve it, then Greco-Roman wrestle those jeans right off him and try another fit.

You may find that it takes some trial and error. After all, when it comes to jeans, all men were not created equal. One man’s Loose-fit is another man’s Slim-fit. But just keep experimenting until you find the right style.

Do it for him. Do it for yourself. Do it for America.

I am in love with this product.  The shades are all super gorgeous and the creamy texture gives you that perfect dewy glow.  My personal favorites are Score (pictured), Fetish (a beautiful rose pink), and Crush (a vivid and bright pink – perfect for a burst of color).

Benefit Bella Bamba

Benefit’s newest powder in a box is a must-have for a quick complexion boost.  This watermelon-pink blush has shimmery gold undertones (but not huge flecks of glitter, promise) and is sure to be perfectly flattering on anyone.

Make Up For Ever HD Microfinish Blush

Make Up For Ever is known for its alluring collection of vivid color – and seriously, if you’ve ever seen the spread of MUFE’s goods, you should already know that it makes you want everything.  This blush is no different.  The highly pigmented liquid blush is quick to dry, so blend quickly.  The payoff, however, is perfectly flushed cheeks that give you that “just worked out” look…without the workout.  I love Caught in the Act (bright raspberry) and Walk of Shame (bubblegum pink).

Kimmie’s Pre-Weekend Pretty-Up: Mad About Mud

This spring, my friends and I have decided to take our summer bikini-body training to the next level by signing up for the Mudathlon.  Training for this down-and-dirty three-mile obstacle course is sure to whip us into shape, but what about the “ew” factor of getting mud everywhere?   To make this grueling race sound as much like a spa day as possible, I dove in to the world of mud-related beauty products to prove that dirt can be, well, beautiful.

For Your Face

Luxurious Dirt: Pricey but effective, NARS Mud Mask just might be worth the cash.  With the use of my teensy-tiny free sample, I saw immediate improvement in my face’s tone and texture, a reduction in pore size, and a general glowing effect on my skin.

Tea Time: A cult favorite of shiny high schoolers everywhere, The Body Shop’s Tea Tree Face Mask is an almost-instant deep cleanser.  It sucks dirt out of pores, soothes redness and blemishes with essential oils, and leaves skin feeling tingly and oh-so-clean.

Acne-Buster: Infused with acne medication, Murad’s Clarifying Mask is some seriously multi-purpose mud.  The product’s clay content helps draw out oil and skin impurities, and the built-in acne medication cures breakouts and blackheads long after you rinse it off.  Note: One of the active ingredients in this mask is sulfur, and it can leave an unpleasant scent on skin, washcloths, etc.

For Your Hair

Gloss it up: Once used to soothe sore joints and muscles, Fango has now been incorporated into haircare.  Oscar Blandi Trattamento al Fango just sounds pretty; massage it into your wet hair, heat-treat with a hot towel for 5-15 minutes, rinse off, and enjoy the gloss-enhancing benefits of mud.

For your Body
